Olympic medalist Michael Phelps made his Subway debut late last week, joining previous spokesperson Jared Fogle in the prime time ad. The ad, which offered a humorous look at the differences between the two men, was developed to display how ‘everyone from world champions to everyday people can have their sandwiches made to their specific tastes at Subway.’ If you recall, Phelps lost his Kellogg’s endorsement earlier this year after being photographed at a private event with marijuana paraphernalia in hand. Coffee and Subs – A Winning Concept for Subway?

Nation’s Restaurant News is reporting that Subway franchisees in Washington D.C. are taking their stores in a new direction. Starting next month, a more upscale version of the neighborhood sub spot will open in Alexandria, VA, featuring paninis, baked goods, and coffee, in addition to the signature sandwiches. Subway spokesman Les Winograd said the cafe concept is “a test that our people in the D.C. area are doing, and it’s something that right now we can’t give great details on because it’s still in the early planning stages.” Could this be a response to the lagging food industry, or perhaps…
