Healthy and Hearty Top Breakfast Trends in 2011

Healthy and Hearty Top Breakfast Trends in 2011

Wow, it’s been a busy couple of weeks in food news, hasn’t it? With sales slumping at some fast casual restaurants, big chains are working quickly to revamp their menus and make necessary changes to stay afloat. Being a Portlander, my heart (and stomach) is loyal to breakfast – but breakfast menus appear to be rapidly changing to keep up with the current trends. According to Nation’s Restaurant News, upscale, healthy breakfast items, like crepes and oatmeal are on the rise – while more traditional, heartier breakfast items like French toast and egg skillet dishes are on the way out….

Today’s Food Newsbits: The Reinvention Of The Jewish Deli; McDonald’s Names Social Media Director

This week’s New York Times has a fantastic piece on the reinvention of Jewish delis across the country, many of whom are trying to up the ante from the traditional deli by incorporating natural and organic food stuffs into the menu. Portland’s own Kenny & Zuke’s, well-known locally for their delish sandwiches and menu items, is recognized, with owner Ken Gordon commenting that after his move from East Coast to West Coast, he realized that if he wanted a good pastrami sandwich, “I was going to have to make it myself.” Some note that the change in traditional deli offerings…

USA Today Readers Pick Favorite Hotel Eateries, Airport Dining Increases With Delays

Ah, the infamous hotel restaurant. Traveling through town, wondering where you can get a quick, easy bite to eat – but something that actually tastes good? Too often, hotel restaurants are disappointing, with the establishment more focused on hospitality than quality or taste. Thankfully, many hotels have been upgrading their eateries, including the Kimpton Hotel chain which features award-winning, “chef-driven restaurants”. USA Today recently compiled a short list of hotel restaurant favorites from frequent travelers as well. Some reader favorites? The dining room at Portland’s Heathman Hotel (I concur!), the Weber Grill at Chicago’s downtown Hilton Garden Inn, and LaVelle’s…

Today’s Food Newsbits: Wendy’s Withdraws From Japan, Andrés’ Bazaar Not Your Usual Eatery

After being in the country for seven years, plans have been implemented to close all Wendy’s locations in Japan. In a market heavily dominated by McDonald’s, Wendy’s opened its first Japanese location in 2002 and had expanded to only 71 eateries, compared with McD’s 3,700 spots. Zensho Co. Ltd., which operates Wendy’s within Japan’s borders, expressed that it was part of their business plan all along, and will close the locations by the end of December. “We will focus our resources on beef bowl restaurants and others. The closure is part of our business plans,” said a Zensho spokesman, who…

Today’s Food Newsbits: Recalled Beef Still Delivered To Schools, Ramsay Hands Over Restaurant, McDonald’s Leader Retires

USAToday is reporting that a recall back in August of over 825,000 pounds of questionable ground beef included meat that was later delivered to schools across the nation through the National School Lunch Program. According to the article, 450,000 pounds of ground beef produced June 5-June 23, dates included in the recall, was purchased by the program and distributed to school districts. Of the four orders, one order tested positive for salmonella while the other three tested negative, and were shipped accordingly, leaving many to wonder why the additional three weren’t included in the mass recall. Because salmonella is seldom…

McDonald’s Moves To Green Up Their European Image

McDonald’s Moves To Green Up Their European Image

Earlier this week, it was announced that fast food titan McDonald’s was initiating a bit of a branding change to their stores in Germany. In an effort to ‘green’ their image, nearly 100 burger locations throughout the country will replace the red backdrop behind the yellow arches with a new hunter green backdrop, following in the footsteps of a handful of stores in Great Britain and France who have already made the change. “This is not only a German initiative but a Europe-wide initiative,” Martin Nowicki, McDonald’s Germany spokesman, told The Associated Press. “With this new appearance we want to…
