Oh, New York. Always with the outstanding events…and this weekend is no different.
Starting on Saturday, in support of upcoming chefs at the French Culinary Institute, the New York Culinary Experience will launch its third annual, weekend-long culinary camp. This two-day cooking extravaganza, touted as an incomparable fantasy food camp, will offer interactive cooking classes with some of the best chefs in the city (and beyond!) including Daniel Boulud, Jacques Torres, Gina DePalma, and Alex Guarnaschelli.
The event, developed to support the Future Chefs Scholarship Fund at the Institute, also features Saturday …

It seems autumn has snuck up on us once again. Here in the Pacific Northwest, the rain set in over the weekend and remains lingering, burrowing itself into our days and nights. Though offset by a few moments of sun, it has become clear that summer is over.
Every fall, one of my favorite food and wine excursions is my travel to the East coast for the Food Network New York City Wine & Food Festival. The festival, which was started in 2008 by founder Lee Schrager, always includes a roster …

Chef Tim Love admitted to being nervous when he took the stage on day two of the Food & Wine Classic in Aspen. Despite his initial confession, the gregarious chef, a former contestant on Top Chef Masters, seemed at ease during his High Steaks Grilling demo under the festival’s main Cooking Tent. It was a packed house, with Love wowing the crowd with his knowledge of meat, spices, and all things BBQ.
The Texas chef, fresh from celebrating the ten-year anniversary of his Lonesome Dove Bistro – “If you know the …

The 2010 Food & Wine Classic in Aspen: Day One

The official first day of the Food & Wine Classic in Aspen started a bit different for me than many of the other food and wine festivals I’ve attended. Uniquely, Aspen offers opportunities for restaurateurs, chefs, managers, and owners to attend sessions dedicated to furthering business operations through their American Express Restaurant Trade Program. Now in its 21st year, I sat in on the program’s first session of the weekend, ‘Meet The Masters’, featuring chefs and restaurateurs Tom Colicchio, Jose Andres, Barbara Lynch, and Rick Bayless discussing everything from food …

When I arrived in Aspen this year, the weather greeted me with a big smile and a warm hug, with sun shining across the flourishing green mountains. In what I consider to be icing on a year of cake, I was thrilled to be invited back to the picturesque Colorado town to cover the 2010 Food & Wine Classic after having an incredible time at the event in 2009.
Last year, as a bit of a food & wine newbie, I sadly made it to town only too late to participate …

Today’s Food Newsbits: Ramsay’s Melbourne Maze Thrives; Moonen, Burke, and Morimoto Procure New Projects

The latest issue of Australian Gourmet Traveller features a review on chef Gordon Ramsay’s first Australian location, which is surprisingly two restaurant concepts in one spot. With a development price tag of nearly $300 million, Ramsay’s maze and maze grill opened in Melbourne in mid-April to mixed reviews.
According to the GT article, maze, the more formal of the two dining rooms, delivers dishes that are “all about exact cooking, clean flavours and precise presentation”, with Australian favorites making their way to the menu.
The Aussie flag is raised over dessert with …

Seattle chef Jason Franey of Canlis was in New York this weekend to bring a piece of the Pacific Northwest to the James Beard House. A former executive sous chef of the highly-rated Eleven Madison Park, Franey was surrounded by family and friends for the event, from Mark and Chris Canlis to food writer Francis Lam and EMP’s chef Daniel Humm. Also on hand, Bill Whitbeck of Taylor Shellfish Farms, Tracey Baker of Gleason Ranch, and Tracy Smaciarz of Heritage Meats – all purveyors of delicious foodstuffs for Canlis as …

28th Annual Food & Wine Classic in Aspen Brings Culinary Masters to Colorado

All the dreary winter weather certainly has me Aspen dreaming this week. Tickets recently went on sale for the 28th Annual Food & Wine Classic held in Aspen every June, and I’m already thinking about the lush mountains, the clean air, and the beautiful blue skies that surround the fabulous event.
The Food & Wine Classic is the mother of all food and wine festivals, developed nearly thirty years ago to showcase the best of the best in the industry. I was more than ecstatic to attend last year’s event, dropping …

I don’t know about you, but Iron Chef America just doesn’t seem to have the same oomph of the original Iron Chef. I enjoy watching the American version – who can dislike anything with Alton Brown commentary – but my heart will always be with the original.
Often credited with boosting Chef Masaharu Morimoto (of Nobu and Morimoto fame) to stardom, the original Iron Chef Japan series, was produced from 1993 to 1999. Each episode, similar to its American counterpart, features a fabulously-dressed Chairman Kaga introducing battles between the Iron Chefs …
