Upcoming Book Release Highlights KFC’s ‘Original Celebrity Chef’

Upcoming Book Release Highlights KFC’s ‘Original Celebrity Chef’

How could I not mention the epicness that is Colonel Sanders’s “accidentally” discovered autobiography? Those hard working marketing mavens over at KFC have not only unearthed the tome, apparently written by the Colonel in 1966, they’re publishing it, starting with a handful of Facebook posts leading up to the book’s release in early June. But it’s the title that caught my attention, of course. Colonel Harland Sanders: The Autobiography of the Original Celebrity Chef. Yep. “What’s most amazing about the book is that while it was written nearly a half-century ago, both the insightful life lessons and the delicious recipes…

Fast Food Sales Rebound; Yum Brands Eyes Health Care Costs

As I noted last week, the restaurant industry’s outlook for 2010 appears to be a bit mixed. According to a recent article in Forbes, however, it seems the change in seasons is contributing to growing sales within the fast food market. A number of fast food chains, including Taco Bell and Hardee’s, are expected to report an increase in business during this early spring, including mega-parent company Yum! Brands, owner of Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, and KFC, who will be delivering their first quarter sales numbers this week. Industry analyst Gregory R. Badishkanian credits the growth to an improvement in…

Today’s Food Newsbits: Bruni’s Review Goes To Court, KFC Franchisees Sue Over Grilled Chicken

Oy! Sometimes you just never know when your writing may be called in for legal questioning! Such is the case of former New York Times restaurant reviewer Frank Bruni, who’s restaurant review and personal emails are now part of a wrongful termination lawsuit currently underway in New York. According to Grub Street, Bruni’s communications regarding Dan Barber’s Blue Hill at Stone Barns restaurant were taken into consideration in the suit recently brought on by a former employee. Allegedly fired due to “not [being able to] perform her duties at a level befitting a three-star restaurant,” Tina Braunstein requested Bruni’s comments…

Today’s Food Newsbits: A Twilight-themed Restaurant, KFC Takes Publicity Too Far, Q&A with Tim Zagat

I still haven’t figured out the whole Twilight obsession – I didn’t catch the ‘Interview With A Vampire’ fever either – but it’s clearly become a worldwide vampire phenomenon. Soon, fanatic fans will be able to dine with a Twilight theme. The Hollywood Reporter noted this weekend that sometime next year, a new Twilight-centric restaurant will open in Forks, Washington, where the movie series is set. Owners Annette and Tim Root are planning to make Volterra a family-friendly restaurant, with the space becoming the second Twilight-ish spot in town, following in the footsteps of the Twilight Lounge. No word yet…

Today’s Food Newsbits: KFC In Hot Water Over Grilled Chicken, Great American Dine Out Begins

Out of Nation’s Restaurant News yesterday, KFC is being sued by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine over their grilled chicken offerings. According to the lawsuit, which PCRM says will be filed in a San Francisco Superior Court, the group claims that KFC must post warnings to their customers about the potential exposure to PhIP, a carcinogen known to cause cancer and reproductive issues found on food items that have been grilled. The suit cites California’s Proposition 65 law, which requires businesses in the state to notify consumers of potential hazards. “Grilled chicken can increase the risk of cancer, and…

Kraft Foods, Kentucky Fried Chicken Debate Brand Changes

Kraft Foods, Kentucky Fried Chicken Debate Brand Changes

In an effort to change with the times, and perhaps boost lagging sales, two major food companies have opted to make a few brand changes recently – but consumers may not be buying it. Food distributor Kraft Foods announced in February the release of a new logo for their products, evolving from their standard recognized red, white, and blue logo to a more contemporary look, featuring swishes and multi-colors. According to Kraft chief marketing officer Mary Beth West, the latest logo is an attempt by Kraft to distinguish between its corporate and product brand identity. The redesigned logo features a new…
