Izard’s Goat Tour Makes A Stop at Portland’s Ping

Izard’s Goat Tour Makes A Stop at Portland’s Ping

Season four was the first Top Chef season I ever watched. Introduced to a dozen great chefs from around the country, it was the first time I learned who Tom Colicchio and Gail Simmons were, and the first time I was introduced to chef Stephanie Izard. With fans across the country, I cheered for Izard, and her many now-familiar competitors, throughout the season and watched the final episode as she secured the Top Chef win from competitor Richard Blais. I almost immediately scoured the web for contact information for the winning chef, stumbling upon her restaurant website, and scribbling a…

Ramsay Sues The Fam; Survey Reports Record Restaurant Closures

Ramsay Sues The Fam; Survey Reports Record Restaurant Closures

I kind of appreciate Gordon Ramsay. He, like a select few in the culinary world, helps to keep the industry all spicy and news-riddled. Long at war with his father-in-law, Chris Hutcheson, the Daily Mail reported last week that the British chef is in the process of suing Hutcheson, over everything from email hacking and embezzlement. The drama includes a tangled web of mistresses, spyware, most of Ramsay’s wife’s family tree, and heaps of money funneled into personal trips and expenditures. Oy, the drama! The newspaper also reported days later that amidst the legal drama, according to a ‘source’, Ramsay…

Daily Blender Exclusive: Izard’s Girl and The Goat A Strong James Beard Contender

Stephanie Izard took to the kitchen at an early age and hasn’t looked back. An accomplished chef before she ever graced the screen as a “Top Chef”, Izard stepped more into the spotlight after winning Bravo’s culinary competition in season four. Already a restaurateur pre-television, she began hosting pop-up dinners around her home city of Chicago shortly thereafter, tagging it ”the wandering goat dinner series” and offering diners a preview of what was to come of her next restaurant. The dinners, held in secret locations throughout the city, turned out to be wildly popular, and only led to the anticipation…

San Francisco Passes ‘Happy Meal Ban’; New Restaurant Franchisees Face Tougher Requirements

San Francisco Passes ‘Happy Meal Ban’; New Restaurant Franchisees Face Tougher Requirements

Whoa! In a groundbreaking move Tuesday, the Board of Supervisors of San Francisco overturned Mayor Gavin Newsom’s veto of a locally-regulated food nutrition ordinance that would require fast food businesses, like McDonald’s, to alter their kid-friendly meals. According to CNN, the newly-approved ruling will require all fast food meals that include toys to adhere to new nutritional standards or be removed from menus. Though Newsom vetoed the ordinance earlier this month, the board was able to override the decision during an 8-to-11 vote Tuesday evening. “From the Institutes of Medicine to the World Health Organization, we know that reducing the…

FDA Recommends Food Safety Staff for Restaurants; Gras Takes Leave from L2O

FDA Recommends Food Safety Staff for Restaurants; Gras Takes Leave from L2O

Perhaps to head off the number of food-borne illness cases reported each year in the country, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently recommended that every restaurant add a food safety manager to their staff. According to the article in Nation’s Restaurant News, the announcement came on the heels of the release of a 10-year study on “retail food risk factors”. With support from the National Restaurant Association and the National Council of Chain Restaurants, the move would hope to ensure “higher compliance levels with food safety practices.” “In looking at the data, it is quite clear that having a…

Today’s Food Newsbits: Ramsay’s Melbourne Maze Thrives; Moonen, Burke, and Morimoto Procure New Projects

Today’s Food Newsbits: Ramsay’s Melbourne Maze Thrives; Moonen, Burke, and Morimoto Procure New Projects

The latest issue of Australian Gourmet Traveller features a review on chef Gordon Ramsay’s first Australian location, which is surprisingly two restaurant concepts in one spot. With a development price tag of nearly $300 million, Ramsay’s maze and maze grill opened in Melbourne in mid-April to mixed reviews. According to the GT article, maze, the more formal of the two dining rooms, delivers dishes that are “all about exact cooking, clean flavours and precise presentation”, with Australian favorites making their way to the menu. The Aussie flag is raised over dessert with a clever take on the lamington, a puffy…
