2012 Taste of the Nation Portland

2012 Taste of the Nation Portland

I was beyond excited for this year’s Taste of the Nation. My experience at last year’s event proved quite memorable, demonstrating that it was, quite possibly, the best food and wine event in Portland. All the top restaurants from across the city, many of the top wineries and breweries in the area, and a handful of shining spirits on hand to ensure that guests didn’t leave dissatisfied – and all for a good cause. This year was no different. Taking place at Jeld-Wen field – curiously in the halls, rather than the green field itself – the Share Our Strength…

The Side Dish: Daily Blender Best of 2011

The Side Dish: Daily Blender Best of 2011

And, here it is, folks. The last week of the year. A time for introspection. A time of reflection. A time to open that bottle of wine you’ve been coveting all year. It’s been a long year – for many – both personally and professionally, and I’m feeling all hopeful that the new year will bring a bevy of blessings and wishes. Here on Daily Blender, I’ve been busy whittling away at the noise and honing in on what really makes this place a favorite destination for food, wine, and spirits enthusiasts. Focusing more on the heart and soul of…

Celebrating Independent Wines at Portland’s Indie Wine & Food Festival

Celebrating Independent Wines at Portland’s Indie Wine & Food Festival

Independent winemakers are springing up all over the world, but no where else is this more evident than within the wine beltline of California, Oregon, and Washington, with regional vintners and restaurants descending on Stumptown’s east side Saturday for the seventh annual Portland Indie Wine and Food Festival. Thanks to a marvelously useful fold up “program” and map (trust me – I get a bit critical of the useless ones) many wines were sipped and swirled during the event, including pours from Anam Cara Cellars, Big Table Farm, Capitello Wines, J. Scott Cellars, Lumos Wine Company, Madrone Mountain, RR Winery,…

Share Our Strength’s Taste of the Nation Comes To Portland

Last night, Share Our Strength’s national Taste of the Nation event came to Portland, corralling nearly every talented chef in Stumptown for bites, brews, and spirits for a good cause. Revered kitchen artists in attendance included Cathy Whims of Nostrana, Chris DiMinno of Clyde Common, Naomi Pomeroy of Beast, Matt Lightner of Castagna, David Anderson of Genoa/Accanto, Gregory Gourdet of Departure, Sarah Schafer of Irving Street Kitchen, and Gabe Rosen of Biwa. The food and drink was plentiful, with pours to pair with everything from chilled cucumber soup to beef tongue crostini, though pork seemed to be the king of…

Annual IACP Conference Invades Portland

Phew! The annual conference of the International Association of Culinary Professionals has overtaken Portland this week, bringing with it great workshops, discussion panels, and events revolving around all things culinary. Top food writers, photographers, and industry folks from around the country, including former Gourmet editor Ruth Reichl and food writers Kim Severson and Michael Ruhlman, have all congregated in Stumptown to “experience Portland and the New Culinary Order.” Last night, the conference officially kicked off with a host city reception featuring some of Portland’s top chefs, restaurants, breweries, and wineries at swanky The Nines hotel. The food offerings were fabulous,…

Locavore Documentary ‘INGREDIENTS’ Premieres in Portland

Locavore Documentary ‘INGREDIENTS’ Premieres in Portland

Thanks to the wonderful folks at the ReDirect Guide, I had the grand opportunity to attend Friday’s Portland premiere of food documentary, INGREDIENTS. The film, which primarily focuses on small farms in the Oregon area, features insight into the local, or ‘locavore’, food movement. Written and directed by Robert Bates, whose previous works include In the Kitchen with Charlie Trotter and True Love & Mimosa Tea, the documentary takes a look at farmers who are helping to develop local, sustainable farms in an effort to combat the growing number of genetically-modified food stuffs as well as the decline of local…
