Last week, Newsweek released its 2009 Green Rankings list, and the Food & Beverage list is an interesting peruse. Soft drink giant Coca-Cola leads the list, even though their “Environmental Impact Score” is curiously low and the list itself notes the company’s use of eighty billon gallons of water a year. (Surprisingly, all of the top Green F&B companies have low EIS scores.) The rest of the top ten includes wine and spirits company Brown-Forman, food manufacturers H.J. Heinz and General Mills, and Coca-Cola rival Pepsi Co. among others.

As an organic advocate, I was very interested in attending the recent ‘Farm to Table’ panel at the Vegas Uncork’d festival. Top chefs, including Bellagio Executive Chef Edmund Wong and sustainability advocate Rick Moonen, discussed the importance of supporting local and sustainable farms by designing menus that feature those food items. MSNBC.com has a great report about companies that increase food prices just as gas prices increase. But what happens when gas prices start to decline? Do food prices decline as well? Not so much.
